Name: Lost Files of Sherlock Holmes: Case of the Rose Tattoo 1 Basic Playing Tips 1.1 Technical Tip The Case of Rose Tattoo was designed to run in MS-DOS. It can be run from Windows95, but you may have problems. If the "Readme" file does not help your problem, play the game from DOS. Do not try to play Rose Tattoo from within earlier versions of Windows. I encountered a problem several times while playing in Windows95. It occurred when I attempted to show an inventory item to someone or view an object for the first time. The game dumped to my desktop unexpectedly. I was successful restarting my system in DOS mode and playing the game from there. In either DOS or Windows95, I had no problems saving or loading games. 1.2 How should I handle conversations with others? *Right click on a person several times to receive more subjects to discuss. *If there is more than one person in the area, try going back and forth from one to the other. Some things are not revealed until someone else mentions it. *It is important to look at everything in the room. Then try talking to them again. *When nothing else seems to work, ask Watson. He is there to help. *If a specific path of conversation is critical, hints will be given in the areas you need them. 1.3 What about objects and inventory? *It helps to "look" at an object first. Left click to look at the item. *Right click on it to see what else can be done with it. *As the game progresses, your options will change. *Do not assume that because you have tried something once that it won't work a second time. *When you see a new option, try it! *When possible, always "examine" an object. More items can appear upon close examination of another. *Sometimes Watson gives valuable insight. 1.4 How do I use the lab table? *You must have an object to analyse. *In inventory, right click on the item and select "Analyse". (If you cannot analyse an object, the option will not be available.) Drag the item to the lab table and left click. *Once you have a close-up view of the lab table, listen to the description of the procedure to be performed. *Use the items on the table by dragging them to each other. *If you cannot get it right, exit. *Watson or Holmes will give you another clue. 2 This space intentionally left blank. 3 Watson Sets Out Alone 3.1 How do I get inside Scotland Yard? *The street vendor has ideas on how to get inside. *Sherlock Holmes can enter the Yard easily. *If Watson wants to get inside Scotland Yard, he will need Sherlock's help. *Watson should gather enough clues to get Holmes interested in the case. *Return here with Holmes later. 3.2 Can I become a member of the Diogenes Club? *You just need the proper credentials. *Members of the club wear jewelry depicting the crest of the club. *Mycroft Holmes is a club member. Have you been to visit him? 3.2.1 The matron won't let me in to see Mycroft! See section 3.3 for more information. 3.2 continues: *Look at Mycroft. *He is wearing a ring with the club insignia! *His ring provides enough credentials. *Remove his ring. 3.2.2 Remove is not on my options list! *If "Remove" is not available to you, go to the Diogenes Club. *Talk to the guard until you have asked him everything possible. *Return here and talk to the matron once again to get back inside. *When you right click on the ring now, remove should be an option. 3.2.3 The nurse won't let me remove the ring! *Watson needs to be alone with Mycroft, but the privacy curtain cannot be closed. *Did you look at the nightstand? *Mycroft's water is a little low. *Ask Sister Grace to get some water for Mycroft. 3.2 continues: *Show the ring to the constable to get inside the club. 3.3 The matron won't let me in to see Mycroft! *Watson simply needs to find another way in. *Try getting into another part of the hospital. *The doctor in the Morgue is someone Watson knows. *Perhaps the nurse will let you visit Dr. McCabe there. *Did you talk to the patient on the gurney? *After talking to him, talk to the nurse about the patients in the mezzanine. *Return to the man on the gurney and ask him about Mycroft Holmes. *As you continue to talk to the matron, one of your dialog choices should include the question about Dr. McCabe. *If you skip the Dr. McCabe question, you may need to restore an earlier game and try again. 3.4 How can I get Holmes out of his room? *Have you talked to him? *Knock on his door and keep talking to him. *Tell him the tidbits you've learned about the explosion. *Have you found any convincing evidence? 3.4.1 Where is the piece of evidence? *Have you gotten inside the Diogenes Club? 3.4.1.1 Can I become a member of the Diogenes Club? See section 3.2 for more information. 3.4.1 continues: *Examine the scene of the explosion carefully. *An item can be picked up in the lounge beyond the archway. *Did you both look at and examine the clock? *The description mentions a second clock face. *Find the tiny clock face slightly below the grandfather clock. 3.4 continues: *Analyse the piece of evidence at the lab table. 3.4.2 How do I use the lab table? See section 1.4 for more information. 3.4 continues: *When you perform the experiment correctly, the explosive noise will get Holmes' attention and get him out of his bedroom! 3.4.3 How do I perform this experiment? *Everything you need is on the lab table. *Watson wants to "warm a sample in a sulfide bath." *Start by using the scraper on the #w+ 3.4.3.1 clock face See section 3.4.1 for more information. 3.4.3 continues: #w.. The residue is now inside the beaker. *Select and drag the proper chemical to the beaker. *Only one chemical will work. *Add Sodium Sulfate. *Mix in the distilled water. *Heat the mixture by using the matches on the burner. 4 Holmes Digs In 4.1 Scotland Yard 4.1.1 How can we enter Scotland Yard this time? *Did you talk to Constable Barns? *He might like a chance to win some of his money back from Augie, the street vendor. *Play Augie's card game and see if you can win. *The hand is quicker than the eye. *Augie is cheating. *Instead of picking one of the cards, choose Augie's hand. *Offer the constable the inside scoop about Augie's game. 4.1.2 When will Lestrade be available? *Lestrade is busy with a young woman. *Help to hurry along his business with the woman. *The young woman feels her brother has been jailed wrongfully. *Did you look at the prisoner? *Talk to Watson about the man and relay his opinion to the desk sergeant. *The police rely heavily on official documentation. *The Yard has a library full of written material on all subjects - including epilepsy. *Look at the library. *Talk to the desk sergeant about the Encyclopaedia Brittanica. *Remember to talk to Lestrade again after Watson interrupts you. 4.2 Diogenes Club 4.2.1 How can we gain entry into the Diogenes Club? *According to Commissionaire Forbes, only those with constable authority can enter. *Who would provide such authority? *Have you talked with Inspector Lestrade? 4.2.1.1 Scotland Yard See section 4.1 for more information. 4.2.1 continues: *Show the permission letter to Forbes. 4.2.2 When will Forbes stop watching us? *Forbes wants to keep a close eye on both of you. *If the two of you were in different rooms, he would need to choose which one to watch. *Give Watson something to do and Forbes will follow him to the other room. *Did you look at the wreckage and sift through it? *Have you tried to shift the beam? *See if Watson has any ideas. *Did you examine the clock? *Holmes noticed something about the clock that Watson missed earlier. *After looking at the handle, pick it up. *Talk to Forbes about it. *Talk to Watson again and tell him to "carry on". *"Have a word" with Watson. *Talk to Watson about the stuffed armadillo. 4.2.3 What evidence can Holmes find inside Diogenes? *Before Holmes can really search, distract Forbes. 4.2.3.1 When will Forbes stop watching us? See section 4.2.2 for more information. 4.2.3 continues: *Did you try to shift the beam? *Holmes needs something strong to pull it out of the way. *Free the chain and use it to dislodge the beam. *There is something hiding in the wreckage, but it is too dark to see. *Didn't someone mention a bull's eye? 4.2.3.2 Where can I find a bull's eye? *A bull's eye is a lantern. *Watson didn't bring his, and Forbes doesn't have one. *Holmes also owns a bull's eye. *Did you look around Holmes' flat? *Look in one of Holmes' desks back at 221B. 4.2.3 continues: *Illuminate the wreckage with the bull's eye. *Shift the wreckage to discover a small spring. *Before you leave, search the floor in front of the bar. *Find a tiny box and get it. 4.3 St. Bart's Hospital 4.3.1 How can Holmes visit his brother in the hospital? *The matron is more stubborn now than before. *Did Holmes ask Watson how he got inside earlier? *Have you talked to the patient lying on the gurney again? *The matron might respect a police order. *Have you talked to Inspector Lestrade yet? 4.3.1.1 Scotland Yard See section 4.1 for more information. 4.3.1 continues: *Show Lestrade's permission slip to her. *More dialog options are available now. *After talking as much as possible to everyone, right click on the injured patient. *"Move" him. *Enter one of the rooms. 4.3.2 Are there any clues to be found in the Morgue? *Dr. McCabe will also want to see police authorization. *Show him Lestrade's permission slip. *Talk to him and to Watson several times. *Eventually get Sir Hubert's cause of death. *Ask to examine Sir Hubert's body. *Perform all actions on the body: Look, examine, turn and smell. *Talk to Dr. McCabe about the burns. *Also ask to see Sir Hubert's clothes. 4.4 Mycroft's Flat 4.4.1 When will Mycroft's Flat appear on my map? *Have you visited Mycroft in the hospital lately? 4.4.1.1 How can Holmes visit his brother in the hospital? See section 4.3.1 for more information. 4.4.1 continues: *Talking to Watson will help. *Wonder where they keep Mycroft's personal items? *Read Mycroft's chart. *Get the receipt. 4.4.2 How can we get inside? *Colleran requires proof of your identity. *Try showing him your business card, the police permission and the summons. *Look and talk to the driver. *Ask Watson about the driver, and talk to him after he has done what Holmes asks. *The driver can verify your identity. Talk to him when he returns. *Now that the identity problem is solved, try to open the door. *Have you found the keys to Mycroft's flat? 4.4.2.1 Where are his keys? *Mycroft had them with him when he entered the hospital. *A receipt is issued to all patients upon admission. *Read his chart. Get the receipt from the clipboard. *Show the receipt to the matron. *Convince her to hand over his personal items. 4.4.2 continues: *Show them to Colleran. *Open the door. 4.4.3 How do I solve the foolscap puzzle? * 4.4.3.1 Where do I find the foolscap? *Talking to Watson might give you some ideas. *Mycroft works in his bedroom, which is to the right of the sitting room. *Search his desk. *Move the candlestick to reveal the foolscap. 4.4.3 continues: *Show the foolscap to Watson and talk to him about it. *Once Watson understands its meaning, he will be able to figure it out. *Two ways will lead Holmes to this understanding. *If you feel like travelling, go back to Mycroft at the hospital and ask him about the foolscap. *Or, you can decode the message. 4.4.3.2 What does the message say? *The message reads: BQQMZ HIJKLMNO & BTU *Mycroft used three different types of coding in this message. *The first word is encoded with a simple substitution code. *Just replace every letter with the letter before it in the alphabet. *The first word of the phrase is APPLY. *The next group of letters, HIJKLMNO, cannot be treated the same way. *What comes into your mind when you first see this group of letters? *H through O. *H through O could also be H to O and thus H2O = water! *Lastly, the meaning of the abbreviation of BTU is British Thermal Units. *British Thermal Units = heat. *The decoded phrase is "Apply water & heat." 4.4.3 continues: *Now Holmes can analyse the situation scientifically. *Where can you analyse something? *Analyse the foolscap at the lab table back at 221B. *If you cannot get it right the first time, exit. Watson will comment on the procedure. *Wet it and warm it. *Put the foolscap in the tray and cover with water. *Light the burner with the matches. *Use the wet foolscap on the flame. 4.4.4 Where are some books in Greek? *Holmes must have solved the foolscap puzzle first. 4.4.4.1 How do I solve the foolscap puzzle? See section 4.4.3 for more information. 4.4.4 continues: *Everyone has personal libraries, but only one has books in Greek. *While at 221B, did you talk to Watson? *Return to the source of this mystery. *The source of THIS mystery is ... *Back at Mycroft's flat. *The bookshelves contain many books, but none to help with this matter. *Do you see any other books about? *Study the contents of the Bible. *Peruse the beginning. *The parchment you find should contain valuable information. *It appears blank. See section 6.2.8 for more information. 6.2.8 How can I wake Flemming? *Smell his cup. Not tea, that is for sure. *Have Watson fetch some ale. *Try to rouse Flemming again. *Talk to him until he recognizes Holmes. 6.2.9 Where can I get more information for Flemming? *Your clue comes from evidence found on the steps of the Needle. 6.2.9.1 What should we find at the Needle? See section 6.2.6 for more information. 6.2.9 continues: *The engraving on the watch fob is too old. *Chemicals can remove the gold from the engraving. *Analyse the watch fob on the lab table at Baker Street. *Listen to what Holmes and Watson discuss about this experiment. *When you have completed it, the engraving will be revealed. 6.2.9.2 How should I perform this analysis? *Combine both acids (nitric and hydrochloric) in the beaker. *Add the watch fob. *Use the tweezers on the beaker. *Look at the watch with the magnifying glass. 6.2.9 continues: *Return to Cambridge and talk to Flemming once again. 6.3 Finding The Murderer 6.3.1 Who could help me identify the suspect? *You have a witness. *Needhem gave Holmes a good description of one culprit. *If you could just share his words with someone who has more resources! *The written word is a powerful tool. *Go visit The Daily Telegraph. 6.3.1.1 When will The Daily Telegraph appear on my map? *Where could someone buy a newspaper? *Near Holmes' flat on 221B sits a newspaper stand. *Talk to Rigsby. *After some fresh newspapers are delivered to Rigsby, Holmes can buy one. *Read the newspaper. 6.3.1 continues: *Talk to Freedman. 6.3.1.2 When will Freedman talk to me? *If you visit Freedman early in the game, he will have little to say. *A description of a criminal will be given to Holmes. *Freedman will make time for Holmes after you have the description. *Come back here when you have received information from Jesse Needhem. 6.3.1.2.1 How can I get Needhem to cooperate? See section 6.2.5 for more information. 6.3.1 continues: *Did you look around his office? *Look and examine the posters, photographs and portrait gallery. *A picture is worth a thousand words. *Freedham needs a mug shot. 6.3.1.3 Where can I get a mug shot? *Look at all of the photographs and posters on Freedman's walls. *Someone has artistic talent. *Freedman will give you the address of the artist, Nigel Hemmings. *Travel to Hemmings' Digs and talk with him. *Who was the witness? *Go back to Jesse Needhem and ask him to accompany you to Hemmings' place. *Talk back and forth with both men to get them to interact with each other. *Hemmings will finish the drawing and hand it to Holmes. 6.3.1 continues: *Show the mug shot to Freedman. 6.3.2 When will Holmes find the suspect? *First Holmes must know his name. 6.3.2.1 Who could help me identify the suspect? See section 6.3.1 for more information. 6.3.2 continues: *He should talk to someone who knows the suspect's habits and personality. *Have you received a message back from Freedman's friend, Carter? 6.3.2.2 When will this message arrive? *This message arrives after several other things have been done. *Have you helped Silverbridge with his problem? *Locate #w+ 6.3.2.2.1 Horace Silverbridge See section 7.2 for more information. 6.3.2.2 continues: #w.'s son. 6.3.2 continues: *Go see the Kaiser. 6.3.2.3 How can I find out what the Kaiser knows? *There are many things to see and do in the Kaiser's room, but only a few will get you anywhere. *Look at the photographs on the dresser. *He seems to have a fascination with photographs. *If you have a camera with you, take his picture. 6.3.2.3.1 Where can I get a camera? *You have met a photographer. *Find a camera and some film on a work table at Hemmings' Digs. 6.3.2.3 continues: *Look at the bust. *The Kaiser resembles the person depicted by the bust. Hit the spacebar to pick up a dart, to aim and then to shoot. Watch the vertical bar for the pitch of your shot. A total of 3 spacebar hits finishes the shot. When you have played 3 darts, pressing the spacebar again begins Jock's turn. When one of you wins, press the spacebar again to exit. *Watch the scoreboard to see how you and Jock are doing and to determine where you should aim. *Jock is really good, but not perfect. He seems to get worse the longer he plays. *If you find you are good at hitting bull's eyes, play 301 or 501. The object is to get as high a score as possible. The winner is the first to count down to zero points. *In Cricket, the object is to score 3 of each number and 3 bull's eyes. *You can ask Jock to play the same game as many times as you like. 7.1.3 continues: *Share the trick with Jenkins. *After the demonstration, search the parlor. 7.1.4 What will make Lady Lockridge help me? *Help her and she will help you. *Lady Cordelia Lockridge definitely needs musical instruction. *If you look at everything around the room, more conversation will be possible. *Look at the piano and the photographs on it. *Ask Watson for suggestions. *Accompany Lady Lockridge on the piano. *Get the sheet music. *Holmes wants to instruct her himself. *Do you remember seeing any musical instruments at Baker Street? *There is a gramophone in Holmes' bedroom. *Look at the wax cylinders and choose the one containing the Paganini. *Play Wax Cylinder No. 3 and crank the gramophone. *To find out if the sheet music is correct, Holmes should practice his own violin while the piece is playing. (His violin is on the bed.) *Return to Lady Lockridge. *Play her violin when she asks. 7.1.5 What can I learn from Lady Cordelia? *Lady Lockridge has an important clue in her possession. *She is a bit embarrassed about the engagement portrait. *You may have looked at the portrait earlier.
